Understandings  of  Ideologies  

In Social Studies 30-2 students will:
  • examine the origins, values and components of competing ideologies
  • explore multiple perspectives regarding relationships among individualism, liberalism, common good and collectivism
  •  examine various political and economic systems will allow students to determine the viability of the values of liberalism
  •  develop understandings of the roles and responsibilities associated with citizenship

​ Social 30-2 will rely on numerous sources such as  reliable internet sites, documentaries, movies, Youtube, Google Docs/Slides, but the primary reference is the authorized textbook from AB Education:   Understanding of Ideolgies: ​Oxford Canada: 2010.

​Social Studies 30-2 is organized into four issues each of which will help students develop an understanding of the key issue of Social 30-2 that students should be able to answer by the end of the course.  That key issue is as follows:
 


To what extent should we embrace an ideology? The four issues that students will work though in order to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the above key issue are as follows:

Related Issue # 1:   
Should ideology be the foundation of identity?
Related Issue # 2:   Is resistance to liberalism justified?
Related Issue #3:   To what extent are the principles of liberalism                                       viable?
Related Issue #4 :  To what extent should my actions as a citizen                                      be shaped by an ideology?

The Learning Sequence Chart at the left shows the sequence that students will work through for each Related Issue starting with Essential Outcomes and finishing with the Summative Assessment of the Issue.
